Remarkable Eco Tyre recycling
Tyres are the really tricky ‘one’ to recycle as they are designed to be extremely durable, resistant to chemicals and they don’t melt like plastics. They are generally made of three materials – nylon fabrics and metal, housed in a shell of vulcanised (hardened) rubber.
On the car, they have spectacular performance; however the tread wears down, loosing grip and making them unsafe, and they can puncture. Approximately 25 million tyres are wasted in the UK each year.
At Remarkable we did not feel there was a good way to recycle such a material, certainly not any funky way, so we spent two years designing and inventing our own way to turn them into products and stop them from being unnecessarily buried.
- First we mechanically shred the material into bits like small chips
- The chips are fed into our invented machine and they come out as a smooth strong and very flexible sheet
- The sheet can then be turned into all sorts of products
We make the sheet into a number of different sizes and thickness and we can also change the surface colour, properly up-cycling it into a great range of products.
