An interview with Ed

What motivated you to take part in the show?

I thought it was an amazing challenge and just a really good thing to do, and if I was able to help I should. I live a low key life and I was uncomfortable bringing attention to myself – especially to money – but I realised it was a force for good.

How has the show changed you?

I was lucky to meet such incredible and inspirational people. Their dedication and emotional drive to help was unbelievable – and with such huge benefits. All of the people I met I now consider to be friends and we have done things together since the show. I do not feel as if I have changed, but I feel it gave me a unique chance to grow, and take on a new experience and I am very grateful for that, and plan to keep it going.

What was the best and worst aspects of the whole experience?

It was a very emotionally and physically draining experience and also a solo experience. I was also horrified how such simple decisions, particularly from the government austerity cuts, can impact on vulnerable people. The best part was meeting such brilliant and inspirational people who have overcome such tragic circumstances and have stayed optimistic.

What does it take to be a millionaire?

There are many different styles of millionaires and each one no doubt will have their magic recipe. In my case as an environmentalist and inventor, I have complete belief in what I do and a desire to make things better. You also have to run a very well-organised company, work extremely hard with a good team, never give up and always stay positive.

Do people’s attitudes towards you change once you become a millionaire?

Having money has never been my identity so people’s attitudes towards me have not changed as they would never have guessed!. My childhood was spent working with people from many different backgrounds, which I have really enjoyed and I was never allowed to feel any different, in fact I had to work harder and take on more responsibility.

If you could rule the world for a day, what changes would you bring about to make sure that shows like Secret Millionaire didn’t have to exist?

I feel there is no panacea to poverty and tragedy. No political system whether capitalism or communism has resolved this, but money can correct a lot of the problems. Dedicated help from people who care for their community and their neighbours is of great value so I would do all I could to encourage that as well.
